New Florida Law goes into effect August 1.

What does it mean and which course do I take?

Florida law now distinguishes between teen drivers under age 18 and adults 18 and older when it comes to required driver education to get a learner's permit or driver's license. Here's what you need to know:

Note: Florida DHSMV will continue to accept the 4-hour TLSAE Course for those under 18 years old getting a Learner's Permit through July 31st! The new 6-hour DETS Course will be required effective Aug 1st. No changes if you're 18 or older.

1. Driver Education Traffic Safety Course (DETS Course) - For Teens 15-17

  • Who Needs It: All Florida teens ages 15 to 17 applying for a learner's permit on or after August 1, 2025
  • Course Length: 6 hours and can be taken 100% online
  • What It Covers:
    • Florida traffic laws and safe driving habits
    • Defensive driving and hazard recognition
    • Dangers of impaired and distracted driving
    • Sharing the road with other vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians
    • Emergency procedures and vehicle basics
    • Step-by-step licensing guidance and Florida's teen driving laws
  • Why It Exists: Senate Bill 994, signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis, requires a more comprehensive education for young drivers to reduce accidents and improve safety (View the law).

2. Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) Course - For Adults 18+

  • Who Needs It: Adults 18 and older who are applying for a first-time driver's license in Florida and have no previous license from another state or country
  • Course Length: 4 hours and 100% online
  • What It Covers:
    • Florida traffic laws and speed regulations
    • Effects of alcohol, drugs, and medications on driving
    • Dangers of distracted driving
    • Basic responsibilities of driving in Florida
  • Why It Still Applies: While teens now require DETS, adults still fall under the existing TLSAE requirement unless they've previously been licensed in a state or jurisdiction recognized by the Florida DHSMV.

Final Takeaway: Which Course Do I Need?

If you're 15, 16, or 17, and want a Florida learner's permit after August 1, 2025 - You must take the 6-hour DETS Course. If you previously completed the TLSAE course, you won't need to take the DETS Course as long as you get your learner's permit within 1 year of the date you completed the TLSAE Course. If you wait more than a year, you'll need to also take the DETS Course.

If you're 18 or older and applying for your first driver's license - You'll need to take the 4-hour TLSAE Course (unless you already have a license from another state or recognized country).
