Orlando Traffic Ticket, Tourists and Highway Risk Information

The City of Orlando is most known because of the close proximity to Disney World. This attraction, along with the many golf courses and other area attractions bring millions of tourists to the area every year.

The population of the city is about 249,000, but the Orlando Metro area actually has a population of about 2.2 million. It's the third largest metro area found in Florida and the 26th largest metro area in the United States. Add in the many tourists visiting every year and Orlando becomes a hotbed for traffic gridlock, tickets and accidents.

If you recently received a traffic ticket in Orlando, you might be rather upset. However, consider the following statistics:

  • Orlando is home to Sea World, Universal Studios and found close to Disney World. It's also known as the Capital for Golf worldwide. The city is one of the premier tourist destinations in the world.
  • The metro area population is 2.2 million, which is plenty to create massive traffic issues. Adding in another 50 million tourists unfamiliar with the area only makes the traffic issues even worse.
  • Many tourists arrive by vehicle or rent a car when they fly to Orlando. They come with a unique driving style and experiences from all over the globe.
  • Lost tourists looking for directions to the many area attractions make unexpected turns and stops often.
  • Drunk driving becomes a major area problem due to the large population of residents and massive number of tourists.
  • The City of Orlando is split by Interstate 4, which carries as much as 183,000 vehicles per day. I-4 is considered the 3rd deadliest highway in the United States based on the number of fatalities per mile.
  • Traffic crashes, injuries and deaths are all on the rise in Orange County

If traffic rules in Orlando were not enforced, can you imagine how bad the traffic situation might be?

Traffic Ticket Statistics for Orange County, Florida

Over 190,000 traffic tickets were issues in Orange County in 2015. Only about 11% of those tickets were dismissed by the court and over 60,000 of the tickets issued were for speeding. Another 16,800 tickets were issues for careless driving.

Driving is a Privilege you Don't want to Lose

You don't have the right to drive; it's a privilege. Too many traffic tickets may cause you to lose your license for up to one year. If you end up with 24 points on your license in a 36-month period, your license may be suspended for a full year. Even just 12 points in 12 months may lead to a 30-day suspension of your license. Points for traffic infractions in Florida include:

  • Speeding - 3 or 4 points depending on your speed
  • Causing a crash while speeding - 6 points
  • Reckless or Careless driving - 4 points
  • Leaving the scene of an accident after causing at least $50 of damage - 6 points
  • Other traffic tickets - 3 or 4 points

It only takes 3 or 4 violations in one year to rack up enough points to lose your license. Less than 10 violations over a three year period could mean a one year suspension of your license, as well. However, you can avoid points on your license with traffic school. The best part, traffic school can be completed online from the comfort of your home.

Basic Driver Improvement School Helps Eliminate Points

After pleading no contest or guilt to a traffic violation, you may be eligible to enroll in Basic Driving School. After completion of your course online, you will receive a certificate of completion, which you will need to turn into the county clerk of the county where the ticket was issued. Traffic school helps you avoid points on your license and also helps keep your insurance rates from going up.

Basic Driving School Eligibility in Orlando, Florida

You may not think you're eligible to take a basic driving improvement course and avoid points on your license. However, if you haven't taken the course in the last 12 months and you haven't taken it five or more times, you may be eligible. The State of Florida allows drivers to attend traffic school up to five times. However, you will only be able to use it to avoid points on your license once per 12 months.

Orange County Clerk of the Court

The Orange County Clerk of the Court handles the processing of traffic tickets issued by area law enforcement agencies. If you plan to attend Traffic School, make sure you notify the Clerk of the Court when you pay your traffic ticket.
